Touch Screen Technology and the Need for Display Screen Hard Coats

Found in every area of our lives, touch screen technology is continually exposed to the risk of damage. A display screen hard coat serves to minimise this risk.

Touch Screen Technology

Ever present in 21st Century lives, touch screen technology can be found everywhere from smart phones, tablets and laptops to automotive in-dash displays, transatlantic aircraft seats and cash points; from musical instruments and point-of-sale displays to manufacturing machinery and other industrial displays; from medical, science and research & development devices to naval, avionic and military displays and beyond.

Depending on the application at hand (as well as price points), touch screens can vary substantially in design. While some systems are designed to register vibrations, others track light and shadows as they move across a screen’s surface. Others still track sound wave or light reflections.

Most of the tablets and smart phones we use today utilise technology monitoring changes occuring in the electrical currents within a screen surface’s conductive layer. Highly conductive and optically transparent, thin Indium Tin Oxide films are also comparatively easy to produce en-mass. This makes them the most popular and most widely used material for most modern smart phones/tablets’ conductive layer.

What all these technologies have in common is that they are frequently exposed to and must survive exposure to unforgiving environments (sweaty palms, the fathomless, often crowded bottoms of bags, pockets, etc.) and the potentially harmful effects of factors including, for example:

  • UV Lighting
  • Humidity
  • Chemicals
  • Handling, Rubbing & Marring

Touch screens must therefore, regardless of their application, deliver effective touch sensitivity while being sufficiently durable, impact and scratch resistant to effectively protect the underlying electronics. This is where hard coatings for display screens come into play.

Display Screen Hard Coat Options

Industry-leading ITO coatings and touch screen manufacturer Diamond Coatings offer a range of optional hard coatings. Designed specifically to improve the impact and scratch resistance of glass, acrylic and polycarbonate display screens and other applications, these hard coating options are available with/without anti-reflective, anti-glare and other special optical properties.
