The Beneficial Properties of Diamox ITO Coatings

Consisting of an indium oxide (In2O3) and tin oxide (SnO2) solution that is vacuum deposited at low temperatures onto glass, polyester, acrylic, or polycarbonate substrates, Diamox ITO coatings offer properties of outstanding benefit for applications across many industries.

ITO Coatings’ Beneficial Properties

Compared to alternative doped metal oxides, Diamox ITO coatings offer:

  • Much better electrical conductivity (depending on thickness, sheet resistances range between 2.5 ohms/sq and 1,500 ohms/sq)
  • Higher optical transparency (a 20 ohms/sq coating has, at wavelengths between 525 nm and 600 nm, a peak light transmission rate of 87% on glass and 81% on polycarbonate)

Tested to MIL STD 48497, Diamox coatings are also chemically stable and resistant to moisture penetration (when subjecting these coatings to salt spray, humidity and thermal cycling, no optical degradation or reduction in coating adhesion/sheet resistance is evident). They are also resistant to:

  • Peeling, flaking and delaminating
  • Crazing and cracking

Indium tin oxide coatings also inhibit, minimise and potentially eliminate ESD (Electro-Static Discharge), EMI (Electro Magnetic Interface) and RFI (Radio Frequency Interface) effects. Offering shielding effectiveness of 26 dB at 1 GHz and 58 dB at 1 MHz, they can subsequently significantly improve electronic devices’ reception and overall performance.

What’s more, these coatings can be:

  • Etched precisely to meet even the most complex of customer patterning requirements and create ultra-fine conductor paths.
  • Applied combined with varying other coatings to create application-specific, highly customised solutions.
  • Supplied in sheet sizes up to a maximum of 1,000 x 1,000 mm or applied to various flat/shaped substrates, injection moulded and free issue parts.

These properties combine to make Diamox ITO the ideal coating for applications including, to name just a few:

  • EMI/RFI Shielding, Electrostatic Dissipation and Photovoltaic Cells
  • Capacitive/Resistive Touch Screens/Panels
  • Heated Display Filters (Optically Clear)
  • Medical Equipment and Avionics Cockpit Displays
  • Military Vehicles’ Navigational Displays and More

Diamond Coatings supply a comprehensive range of ITO/Index Matched ITO, as well as Multi-Layer Anti-Reflective (AR) coatings – many of which were designed specifically to meet customers’ specific optical requirements – to industries including:

  • Automotive, Aerospace and Space
  • Entertainment, Imaging & Microscopy and Research & Development
  • Medical, Military & Defence and More
