Hard coated polycarbonate and its applications

Hard coated polycarbonate and its applications

Standard polycarbonates are a naturally transparent amorphous thermoplastic. Thermoplastic materials become liquid at their melting point which make them perfect for reusing and recycling.

Hard coated polycarbonate has numerous applications in today’s modern world. Polycarbonates are a popular choice for manufacture due to their ease of manipulation in machining and are easily moulded and thermoformed.

Polycarbonates are a range of thermoplastic polyesters that can come with some interesting coating options, such as anti scratch, impact, chemical and heat resistance making them impressively durable. They can also become electrically conductive using a specialist coating (more of that later).

Various coatings can be applied to polycarbonates to achieve different outcomes and potential uses. Diamond Coatings apply hard coatings as well as anti reflective coatings and also ITO (Indium Tin Oxide) coatings.

The Indium Tin Oxide coated polycarbonates open up a world of applications due to the coating remaining transparent yet electrically conductive. Conductive polycarbonates are used in the production of touchscreens and displays, opto-electronic displays and shielding (EMI/RFI) filters for example.

Anti Reflective coatings applied to polycarbonates provide perfect solutions for reducing reflections as well as protecting from harmful UV rays. Anti reflective polycarbonate applications include lenses for spectacles, gallery installations and display cases, retail displays and screens, external information displays and much more.

Both of these coatings (which are a speciality of Diamond Coatings) can also have the increased benefit of an additional hard coating applied to prolong the lifespan and robustness of the polycarbonate. Diamond Coatings can also provide these coatings on a variety of substrates, including a range of different glass and thin PET films.

Where there is heavy usage and demanding environments, the anti scratch hard coating is definitely recommended. The hard coatings we provide are there to increase strength, and improve scratch and chemical resistances.
